Founded at Govan in 1886. In 1968 the company became part of the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders consortium which collapsed in 1971. Formed into Govan Shipbuilders as part of a recovery deal, and nationalised as part of the state owned British Shipbuilders in 1977. Returned to private ownership in 1988 and sold to Kværner to become Kværner Govan. Sold to BAE Systems in 1999 and now part of BAE Systems Surface Ships
