Founded in 1900 by taking over the facilities of the Bilbao Dry Dock Company. In 1969 the company merged with Astilleros de Cadiz and La Naval to form Astilleros Españoles. Facing increasing losses, the yard was closed in 1984 while the remainder of AESA merged in 2000 with Empresa Nacional Bazán to form IZAR which was subsequently taken over by Navantia in 2005.
