Founded as Andrew Leslie & Co. in 1853 and merged with the locomotive works of R. & W. Hawthorn in 1886. The locomotive interests were sold in 1937. Acquired by the Swan Hunter Group in 1968 and renamed Swan Hunter & Tyne Shipbuilders. Nationalised as part of the state owned British Shipbuilders in 1977, the yard wa closed in 1982.
