Founded in Greenock in 1711 by John Scott. Moved to Cartsdyke in Greenock in 1850, becoming Scott and Company in 1851. In 1883, acquired the nearby Cartsburn yard of Robert Steel & Sons. Incorporated in 1899 as Scotts Shipbuilding &smp; Engineering Co. Acquired the Cartsdyke West yard of Ross & Marshall in 1925 and in 1934 exchanged the original Cartsdyke East yard for the mid Cartsdyke yard of Greenock Dockyard Co. In 1965 acquired first Scott and Sons at Bowling and then the neighbouring Greenock Dockyard Co. at Cartsdyke, the Cartsburn and Cartsdyke yards being merged in 1966. Merged with Lithgows in 1968, continuing operations as Scotts Shipbuilding Co. Nationalised as part of the state owned British Shipbuilders in 1977 after which new orders slowed, with the yard closing in 1984. The site was subsequently used for the construction of offshore oil rigs.
