Founded in 1855 as Richmond Shipyard and acquired in 1932 by Philip Kelly Harris. Yard sold in 1963 becoming Appledore Shipbuilders and acquired by Court Line in 1964. Following Court Line's collapse in 1974 the yard was nationalised as part of the state-owned British Shipbuilders. Merged in 1986 with the only remaining nationalised yard, Ferguson Shipbuilders to form Appledore Ferguson. Demerged from Ferguson and sold to North East Shipbuilders in 1989, the combined company being renamed A&P Appledore. In 2003 the yard went into receivership and was subsequently acquired by DML and reopened in 2004 as DML Appledore. DML was itself acquired in 2007 by Babcock International and the yard continued in operation as Babcock Marine Appledore. Closed in 2019 because of a lack of orders, the yard was purchased in 2020 by the owners of Harland and Wolff and reopened as Harland & Wolff (Appledore).
