Founded at South Dock, Sunderland as Bartram, Haswell & Co. in 1871 and renamed Bartram and Sons in 1890. Taken over by Austin & Pickersgill at Southwick in 1968. Nationalised as part of the state owned British Shipbuilders in 1977, the yard was closed in 1978 with operations continuing at the Southwick yard.
