William Pickersgill & Sons

Founded by William Pickersgill in North Dock, Sunderland in 1838, moving to Southwick in 1851 and renamed William Pickersgill & Sons in 1907. Merged with S.P. Austin and Son in 1954 to form Austin & Pickersgill. Austin's yard at Wear Dock was subsequently only used for ship repair work. Took over Bartram and Sons at South Dock in 1968. Nationalised as part of the state owned British Shipbuilders in 1977. Privatised in 1986 and merged with Sunderland Shipbuilders to form North East Shipbuilders which closed in 1988
